About the Artist

Susan Bremer O’Neill is a creative nonfiction writer whose memoir, From Sex Appeal to Self Appeal: Stripping Barriers to Recovery—Leaving Addiction, Returning to Body and Mind chronicles her unconventional journey to self-respect and wholeness. Her other published writings include "The Grind," in Flesh for Fantasy: Producing and Consuming Exotic Dance, print magazines, most notably Men’s Health and Gauntlet, The Modesto Bee Newspaper, and online. Her article, “Stripping the Shadow,” was included in a San Francisco State University reader for the course, “Human Sexuality Studies & Psychology.” While working with women to help them embody their playful sensuality, Susan produced the woman-friendly DVD, Striptease for Real Women, featuring ten students. Her 2018 TEdx Wilmington talk, "Self Appeal not Sex Appeal to Embrace Your Sexual Body," continues her advocacy for women to own their bodies.
Susan has spoken at San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, a Berkeley Chapter of the National Organization for Women, UC Stanislaus Panhellenic Society, confidence camp for girls, and San Francisco Bay Area women’s groups and retreats. She has appeared on Fox News and been interviewed in San Francisco Bay Area media.
Susan has been a pioneer and trail blazer her entire life. She graduated with high honors from high school at sixteen, then as the sole woman from a Laser Technology program, again with high honors, at twenty two. Her laser electro-optics AA degree precipitated her technical career working on the NOVA laser system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for nine years and in private industry traveling throughout the United States and Canada for three. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1998 from Vermont College where she focused on reading and studying personal essays about current culture, sexuality, and women’s issues. She was heavily influenced by E. B. White, Nancy Mairs, Susie Bright, and Erica Jong.
Susan’s unique journey away from being a scientist to an exotic dancer at thirty-five has led her to not only be a writer, but also a champion of women. Based upon her philosophy of Self Appeal®, that all relationships start with the relationship we have with ourselves, for twenty years through coaching and workshops Susan has empowered women worldwide to embrace their bodies for authenticity, confidence and relationship success.
After moving to Wilmington, Delaware in 2017 with her husband and family of six rescue animals, Susan has become active in the Wilmington artist and recovery communities. She regularly reads at open mics and brings Self Appeal® workshops into women’s recovery homes. She speaks in rehab facilities unabashedly sharing her experiences while offering suggestions for self-love and respect. For the general public, Susan offers Self Appeal® workshops for women to build greater self-respect, self-love and confidence, and writing workshops designed to help all people make peace with their past in order to heal themselves.
