About the Artist

Violinist Lisa Vaupel feels the power of music can reach everyone.  Her aim is to share her passion as a performer and teaching artist -- using creative approaches to pass along the joys of making  and experiencing music to new audiences.  She performs as Principal Second Violin of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Associate Concertmaster of Opera Delaware, as a tenured violinist of the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra and is featured regularly as a chamber musician in these ensembles’ chamber series.   Lisa was a member of the Serafin String Quartet from 2013 to 2020, with a rigorous concert schedule across the country from Marco Island, FL to Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. The quartet also held a teaching residency at University of Delaware where Lisa was on the violin faculty. She has also been a returning artist featured in the Sequoia Chamber Workshop(Arcata, CA), Sundays at Three (Columbia, MD), and Baltimore’s Bach Concert Series. Lisa has also appeared as soloist in Barber's Violin Concerto and Vivaldi's Four Seasons with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra.   Lisa also loves departing from the classical realm, playing most recently as Concertmaster for Hello Dolly and with the three month run of Hamilton in Philadelphia. 

As a dedicated advocate of arts education, Lisa has served as Coordinator and Teaching Artist for Philadelphia Orchestra’s School Partnership Program and as guest artist and collaborator in creating cross-genre programs on the World Café’s Live Connections Bridges series. Currently, Lisa is a Teaching Artist for DIAE (Delaware Institute for Arts in Education) and is on the faculty at LaSalle College High School.  Lisa has also created and performed concerts and music residencies through the Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, and Delaware Symphony, which presented her with the Albert Beekhuis Award in 2010 for excellence in performance and community engagement. Lisa received her Bachelor of Music degree with High Distinction from Indiana University, Bloomington, and earned her Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory.

Teaching Artist Programs Lisa offers:  

  • A newly  developed Creative Aging program aiming to encourage current string players (age 55+) and those who are thinking about dusting off their instruments they once played --   brushing up their technique and ensemble skills, and encouraging participants to start where they left off (sometimes many years ago.) Depending on interest and level of participants, a foray into composing and performing may be wound into the scope of the programs. Otherwise, there will be layers of ensemble playing and creative pathways to reaching performance goals. Final performances will be in a concert format, with participants also sharing their reactions to the process with an audience. These programs would work in a library with a separate room, or other venues with some flexibility with sound production.

  • Fractions-- Math and Music Residency for 3-4th graders, a 4-6 week residency beginning with a string quartet visit to the school and culminating in students performing pieces they have composed by combining fractions (and therefore, musical notes, together.) 

  • Teaching Artist Residency for DIAE- a recent project-- for elementary-middle school string students; reflecting on and reacting to a performance by the duo Black Violin, followed by a composition project based on Simple Gifts, elementary-middle school string students. This residency could easily work with high school students, and could take almost any live performance and work to create a reflective composition and performance. Foundational string playing skills are reinforced, and some new concepts introduced. Discussion focuses on being able to attain goals by hard work; not just following what others are doing; pushing yourself to be the best you can; the value in being creative. 

  • Long  and short term residencies in elementary schools and middle schools that create a love of musical exploration and creation. Acquiring and reinforcing musical skills as well as reflecting and making connections to music are key concepts. The most striking take-aways with this type of long term residency are the interpersonal skills that develop with these new challenges and successes, forming trust within the group. Lisa is keen on working in a multi-disciplinary way, aligning the musical ideas with another part of the curriculum and really collaborating with classroom teachers. This kind of program works very well with a general classroom teacher who is up for a creative challenge. Lisa will support their ideas and goals, and come up with plans for infusing art into their day to day work.

  •  Any type of lesson, masterclass or sectional for individuals and small and large ensembles. 

  • In a more formal concert setting, Lisa is keenly interested in giving recitals and concerts that include some direct interaction and dialogue with the audience. Her goal is to inspire new listeners and explorers of music, and she offer performances that open a platform for dissecting and discussing works. She is also very interested in multi-media performances, and welcomes collaborating with visual artists, dancers, and musicians in non-classical genres.

In spring of 2021, Lisa participated in the Delaware Creative Aging professional development initiative.

Performance/Exhibit Requirements: I perform in either solo or chamber settings, in formal concert settings or in settings that are full of audience engagement and involvement. Many venues are possible— as long as protected from the elements because of playing a string instrument. Amplification is not preferred, unless there is speaking involved.
