PIC has a unique role in Delaware.  PIC is the only organization in the state charged by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, to provide information and support to parents of children with disabilities from birth to 26 to help them access appropriate education and related services for their children.  This is the foundation of our work, and one that we take very seriously.  As the state’s only Parent Training and Information Center (PTI), PIC Parent Consultants receive intensive training from federal and regional sources to ensure that they are providing relevant, useful, and quality information to the families they serve. 

As a PTI, PIC is among 104 PTIs and Community Parent Resource Centers throughout the country that provide information, training, technical assistance and support to the families of more than seven million children and youth with a broad range of disabilities from birth to age 26 throughout the United States and territories.  To find out about the PTI in each state, visit the Technical Assistance Alliance website.  

As a PTI project, PIC is committed to helping parents of childen with disabilities and youths with disabilities acting as self-advocates by providing information, individual assistance, and training to enable them to:

• Ensure inclusion in general education classrooms and extracurricular activities with peers whenever possible
• Meet functional and academic goals
• Meet challenging expectations established for all children, including college- and career-rady academic standards; and
• Prepare to achieve positive postsecondary outcomes that lead to lives that are as productive and independent as possible.

Through the PTI project, PIC staff members receive significant training to ensure the delivery of relevant, quality, and useful information to parents and caregivers.  PIC provides individual technical assistance and problem solving, workshops, webinars and conferences, a comprehensive lending library, and a weekly electronic newsletter that reaches over 4,000 readers.
