About the Artist

David Luna is a visual artist working primarily in the cartoon mediums. He has published comics in a bi-monthly humor magazine titled "The Annual", where he also interviewed notable comedians and comedy writers, and studied 2D animation under Disney animator Sam Ewing at Full Sail University.

Luna has a strong belief that characters and narratives comics should be informed by real people and situations, however fictional and outlandish a story might be. With this also comes the view that there is more to be found in the overlapping of artforms across media, and such that an artist will benefit from experimenting outside of their comfort zones into entirely new domains. Luna has not only interviewed comedians, but also makes it regular practice of it on the Eastern Shore and maintains connections through the world of comedy, having been invited to participate in shows at the Good Good Comedy Theatre in Philadelphia, PA, and most recently the Dickens Parlour Theatre in Clarksville, Delaware. The subject of History provides the necessary context for artists to connect their work to timeless threads of thought, tradition, and experimentation.

Luna's cartoon designs are informed mainly by the works of American cartoonist such as Bill Watterson, Jeff Smith, and George Herriman. In 2020 Luna published a deck of tarot cards titled "Lotería del Sol: The Mexican Tarot", merging the traditions of Tarot and icons from the game Lotería for the first time. In 2021 Luna was interviewed by art historian and curator of the Mexic-Arte Museum, George Vargas, about the tarot deck and his influences as a cartoonist and comedian. In preparation for creating the deck, Luna drew a series of studies of designs from the Smith-Waite Tarot, designed by Pamela Coleman Smith. Luna continues to perform and create comics in the vein of a new American spirit.
