People say that Rosemary Connelly’s paintings make them happy, which is very rewarding for her as an artist and a personal goal. Her watercolors with pen and ink are recognizable in her handling of the medium, with fluid line quality, layers of translucent colors and strong compositions. She is fascinated by the textures and colors of a world where doors, windows and peeling paint reveal the passage of time and human existence. Still lifes are also favorite subjects for Connelly, as she creates lively, impressionistic portraits of flowers and fruits that invite you in. She also paints in acrylics and oils and has dabbled in pastels and mixed media.
Focusing on art and travel, Connelly and husband Bob, a photographer, lived simply in Italy for two years, a subject she never tires of painting. The philosophy of their lives is to “live cheap and make art” meaning that they strive to live a simple life, focused on experiences, not on the accumulation of things. Since moving to Milford in 2007, she has been inspired by the aging barns, the beauty of the eastern shore, farms, fields and factories.
Her work is in private collections throughout the United States and in Europe.
Connelly’s other passion is watercolor journaling and she loves teaching it as well as doing it, whether she is away on vacation or in her own home. She believes “There is something magical about concentrating on an interesting object or place and capturing that moment in a journal with your own words and images.” She has taught workshops throughout the country, from Vermont to California, Illinois to New York City and in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. Delaware Art Museum, Mispillion, Rehoboth, and Millsboro Art Leagues have invited her to teach several times. Her classes regularly fill up and her students say she has changed their lives.
"Rosemary immediately put me at ease in her watercolor journaling workshop. Her instruction was clear and encouraging. Rosemary creates a wonderful environment that allows everyone to practice and grow at his or her own pace. I came away from the session eager to try out what I had learned. I hope to attend more of her workshops in the future so I can continue to learn from Rosemary and to be inspired by her teaching and by her own beautiful work." PAIGE E., MILFORD, DE
