About the Partner / Provider

Since 1982, Freedom Hills, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, has been bringing horses and people with disabilities together.

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for the disabled and challenged, and do not turn anyone away due to finances.

We offer equine facilitated therapy to individuals with physical and/or emotional challenges, as well as kids at risk and military veterans, with their physician's approval. Classes are conducted by trained instructors and assisted by volunteers and physical therapists when needed. As always, safety is our highest priority.

Internationally, riding is recognized as one of the most beneficial forms of therapy for disabilities. Rediscovered in Germany in the late 1960's, therapeutic riding has been successfully practiced all over the world. For the physically impaired, riding a horse can play a significant role in rehabilitation. Walking is the best exercise a human being can get. A horse's gait is similar to the motion of the human pelvis while walking. Therefore walking while astride a horse is good for all six systems of a person's body. Equine facilitated therapy helps strengthen spine and pelvic muscles, as well as provide all the criteria of low-level aerobics. The discipline needed to master the skills can improve concentration and emotional control for the mentally impaired. Frequently a strong bond develops between the horse and participant.

We participate in the Special Olympics at county and state levels and has also participated in the National Games.

Freedom Hills operates at Rolling Hills Ranch in the pastoral Maryland countryside. Services are provided to individuals in the Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania Tri-State area.
