Pets for Vets, Inc. is celebrating its 10th Anniversary on October 20, 2019. From one location in 2009 to 26 chapter across the U.S. and D.C. the organization has successfully made more than 350 Veteran-pet matches nationwide.
The Northern Delaware Pets for Vets Chapter was established in 2018 and serves New Castle County in the state of Delaware and environs. The Northern Delaware Chapter is a 501 (c) (3) designated non-profit. Presently we have made two matches and are working on three additional matches. Veterans apply for animals through our web site and the interview and selection process continues with the animal trainers selecting an animal to match the needs of the Veteran.
Our goal is to help heal the emotional wounds of military Veterans by pairing each one with a shelter animal that are specifically selected to match this or her personality. Experienced animal trainers rehabilitate the animal, which may otherwise have faced euthanasia, and teach them good manners to fit into the Veteran’s lifestyle. Training can also include desensitization to wheel chairs or crutches as well as recognizing panic or anxiety disorder behaviors.
Pets for Vets provides a second chance for both our returning Veterans and shelter animals. Shelter animals can make excellent companions but might not have that chance and our brave solders receive a second chance at health and happiness. The bonds of friendship formed between man and animal have the power to ease the suffering of our troops when they return from overseas.
